Chapter Nine
TORQUE
Having Bristol in my home felt right. I hadn’t yet told her she was my ol’ lady officially, or what that even meant. I’d hoped I’d have time before I had to broach the subject, ease her into my way of life. Those hopes were dashed when my phone lit up with a call from Mustang.
“Everything all right, Pres?” I asked when I answered.
“Not even fucking close.”
Fantastic. My woman wasn’t even in my house a full day and already shit was going on that needed my attention.
“What do you need?” I asked.
“You. Here. I’ll give you twenty minutes to get your baby momma situated. I’m sending J.D. over to keep an eye on the place. If she needs anything, she needs to tell him. Not safe for her to leave the house alone.”
My nape prickled. Just what the hell was going on? “Bristol’s in danger?”
“Only if she’s seen as a weakness for the club. You’re the only one of us to settle down, and you’ve got a kid on the way. I’m not taking any chances. You leave the house for the foreseeable future, you make sure there’s a Prospect on hand to keep an eye on her.”
Shit. Bristol was going to flip the fuck out if I put her on lockdown. We hadn’t really discussed the Wicked Mayhem that much, or my role. She wouldn’t understand me taking off and leaving someone to babysit her. Hell, she’d probably try to rip off my balls. Or worse, pull out the waterworks.
“I’ll be there soon as I can.” I hung up and went to find Bristol. We’d just eaten and she’d said something about wanting to read a book. It didn’t take me long to find her in a lounge chair in the backyard near the pool. Seemed this was going to be her happy spot. “Baby girl, we need to talk.”
She laid the book across her stomach and watched as I approached. I sank onto the chair next to hers and braced my forearms on my knees. I didn’t have time to go into a lot of detail, and there was honestly shit she’d never hear about it. But I needed to tell her something to make her understand the seriousness of her obeying when I told her to keep her ass at home.
“My Pres called and needs me at the clubhouse,” I said. “I don’t have details of what’s going on, but I won’t be able to focus while I’m gone if I don’t know you’re safe.”
She opened and shut her mouth, apparently deciding to let me finish before she interrupted. The apprehension in her eyes told me that at least she understood I wasn’t screwing around or trying to put her in her place. I was seriously fucking worried about her safety right now.
“My Pres is sending over a Prospect by the name of J.D. If you don’t want him in the house with you, I’ll make sure he watches the perimeter and stays outside, but I’d feel a lot fucking better if you would allow him inside.
